What your child needs in a travel insurance policy!

drnatprevatt

This post explains what children and young people need in a travel insurance policy and why you should always be truthful when choosing a policy:

First off, when looking for insurance, failing to declare something simple can invalidate your whole policy even if your claim has nothing to do with that which you didn't declare!

So make sure you're truthful about the following:

  • All medical conditions and any pending tests or treatment, even if you think it irrelevant (failing to declare something ongoing can invalidate your whole policy).

  • The full length of your trip and all the places you'll visit- if something happens in a transit country you'll need to be covered for that country!

  • All activities you're planning; you may need add-ons for some sports/water adventures.

  • All transport you plan to use - for example car or motorbike use will usually incur a premium because road accidents by tourists on unfamiliar roads are the commonest cause of death in travellers

You need a policy that covers for treatment in state and private hospitals

Insurance companies pitch themselves so that you will compare them to get the cheapest- but that's a really bad idea! If you don't have insurance or if your insurance doesnt cover your needs the hospital bills can be enormously expensive. You could be paying the bills until you retire and that's not an exaggeration!

Here's what you need as a minimum on your childrens travel insurance policy:

  • A 24 hour emergency helpline!

  • All your childs health problems to be covered (including any mental health problems), never exclude current health problems!

  • Treatment in state and private hospitals covered

  • Emergency transport such as an ambulance from the accident, or a flight from one hospital to the next

  • Reasonable costs for one parent to stay with the child if they need to remain in country eg if they are quarantined or too sick to leave

  • Emergency travel home on medical grounds (repatriation to the UK)

  • Repatriation of all trip members if their parent dies on the trip

  • Getting home after medical treatment if their original flights are missed

  • Getting home if there is civil unrest, a terror attack or natural disaster

  • For teenagers and adults you need to know if consumption of alchohol ior recreational drugs will invalidate your policy - this is common to many policies

  • If youre pregnant your pregnancy and any complications must be covered
